Brief History:
Oscar Garza, Jr. started his career in Laredo, Texas with his high school mariachi
program at Martin High School under the direction of Francisco J. Sosa. He was
Band President and received the John Philip Sousa Band Award. He also attended
the School of Music at the Vidal M. Trevino Magnet School and studied trumpet under
the expertise of Robert M. Lopez. After graduation, he decided to continue his
education at Texas State University-San Marcos (formerly Southwest Texas State
University), where he graduated as an All-Level Music Education Major and studied
trumpet with Dr. Keith Winking. Oscar has also been a member of the Texas A&M
International University concert band. Not only skilled in mariachi, but other ensembles
he's performed with include the Texas State Wind Ensemble, Jazz Orchestra,
Symphony Orchestra, and Bobcat Marching Band (where he was Section Leader for
2 years). Oscar is a member of the Gamma Phi Chapter of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia,
where he was Vice-President and was the Student Coordinator for the Fiesta del
Mariachi Conference in San Marcos for three years. Several artists include Mariachi
Campanas de America and Mariachi Cobre. Oscar sometimes performs with the
Laredo Community College Mariachi, in which he traveled with them to Washington
D.C., in March of 2004.
Currently, Oscar teaches in the Manor Independent School District. He is a December
2003 graduate of Texas State University-San Marcos.
